Fire Rating - An Explanation
Fire Resistance Levels (FRL) are a series of numbers (callibrated in minutes) that describe the ability of a certified product to withstand the spread of fire. Expressed in the form nn/nn/nn where the nn represents a value in minutes, a typical structural wall component of a building may be rated at 60/60/60. These numbers represent the following structural elements:

Structural Adequacy - The first number refers to how long the product can withstand the spread of fire and still support what it is designed to support, in other words its structural integrity. Windows are not structural items, and therefore are not tested for this aspect of fire resistance. Usually the first position is represented with “-“.

Integrity - The second value represents the product's integrity and determines how long the product can withstand the spread of fire.

Insulation - The final number refers to the length of time that the product can prevent the spread of fire due to heat transfer. Special requirements include the ability to prevent a localised temperature increase of more than 180 degrees C, or an average temperature increase of 140 degrees C for the duration of the test.
